What is the meaning of Connexity error in CATIA?

I found this explanation for Connexity in a tutorial recently .
You can only create polar extremums on planar and connex geometry (non-connex geometry is geometry which is open or is self-intersecting on non-continuous curves).(Screenshot 93)
Here it is told that polar extermums can be used only on connex geometry. They have also told that non-connex geometry are open profile in nature.
But when I make an open curve on a reference surface, I can still find the polar extremums. How is that possible? Isn't a curve considered open here? (screenshot 92)
