Electronics repair is only one aspect of my profession although I know many electronics engineers and technicians who are in the repair industry and rely on repairs as their profession.

What if car manufacturers started the same practice as the electronics manufacturers and expect you to throw away your car and buy a new car every time a simple part goes wrong, or simply force you to ship your car back to the main manufacturing factory every time a simple part needs replacing then charge you what ever they like for the privilege. I am not sure you would find that so acceptable so why is it acceptable with electronics?

Electronics manufacturers are intentionally restricting the right to repair your own property and the right to repair to an entire industry who rely on repair work as their profession by withholding part numbers. I don't find this acceptable.

I'm an electronic manufacturer and an electronic designer both by profession and for fun and I continue to design things that get smaller and smaller - cars don't. I have invested into the tools for the profession and I have expanded my knowledge and ability to match...

Cars are designed to fit the reason for which they are designed, however, by that same token they do become more complex and have become more complex over time to the point wherein you require specialized tools in order to effect the repairs.

The same is true of electronics. I can get any IC I want, whether I have the tools to be able to repair the balls on a BGA, replace a mico-wire on a flip-chip IC or be able to reprogram the main buffer in a uASIC is completely dependent on having the proper tools.

As a society we push each other to build designs that incorporate more technology into them - become better, faster, smaller and those designs require better more expensive tools - you wouldn't want a smart phone that uses 1960 technology so why are you bitching about things getting smaller and harder to repair ?

Get the proper tools and stop whining … or don't... as a member of this community I will do my best to help you, but I won't be able to physically lend you my tools and I doubt that you will fly in to my lab just for a small repair on a flash memory. Economies of scale my friend... but, I was referring earlier to the fact that you identified a problem - the recycling of electronics that simply are too difficult to repair on the micro-scale and what to do about them. Some people make a lot from finding solutions....

Your points are certainly valid. I hope no offence was taken by my reply message Michael. That was certainly not my intention.

I am the person who runs the Electrical engineering and Electronics design group we are currently on. My intention is to rustle up some healthy devils advocate debate and get people engaging. Engineers with your perspective are always much valued and welcome.
