Have their been any innovation in gears lately? If so, are they necessary?

The invention relates to transmissions or gears for the continuous and uninterrupted conversion of rotational speed. A first shaft takes the form of a truncated cone with gears and oppositely oriented spiral toothed transitions therebetween. A second shaft lies parallel to the outer surface of the cone and comprises a gear which can move freely along the shaft while remaining in engagement therewith. Gears are located at the beginning and end of the cone, the diameter of said gears being equal to the diameter of the cone at their respective locations, and the number of teeth being proportional to the first and last transmission ratio of the transmission. The pitch of the teeth of all of the gears and of the spiral toothed transitions is identical. The gears of the cone are connected to one another by two oppositely oriented spiral toothed tracks. Additional gears may be located at the points where the toothed tracks intersect on the conical shaft, the number of teeth of said gears being proportional to the diameter of the cone at the point of intersection. In order to synchronize the position of the teeth of the gear of the second shaft and the position of the teeth on the spiral toothed transitions and gears of the first shaft, an electronic or mechanical automatic control system must be used, which moves the gear of the second shaft along the surface of the conical shaft in such a way that the teeth are in constant engagement.

Actually already the basic formula P=M·n is wrong, it should be either P=2·Pi·M·n oder P=ω·M. Anyway the experiment doesn't make any sense as they made a perpetuum mobile^^

It could has 1.000.000 gear ratio in a single stage using common bevel gears.
do you have any links or sources for it? Actually the cycloidal gearboxes and wave strain gearboxes also work by using the precession effect. So seems for me to be nothing new.
Huge ratios are also possible with well known special types of cycloidal gearboxes but they all have the common problem to be very bad at efficiency. So therfore ratios of 1.000.000:1 aren't in practical use because of efficiency.
from my knowledge, I would say that the innovation in the field of gear design has almost reached its potential. When I was doing my literature study, the development is more towards reducing vibrations and noise emissions during operation by various factors such as macro and micro geometry optimization of tooth flank, state of art coating techniques such as DLC coatings to also prolong gear life and smoother transmission. These are my views and apologies for the very late reply.

Precession Transmission is completely different from WOLFORM gearbox.
I think the main current innovation in gears is transitioning from the traditional gear generating process of tooth cutting into multiaxis CNC tooth cutting. In result, the gears have become significuntly less cost and higher performance. Butmany inventor are still trying to come up with exotic designes. I used to do it as well. US9157517B2 was my last one.
