Just wondering how how it is possible to have over 6 million users with such little activity.
Well.....
Because we only get to do this when we can enjoy it...
The rest of the time we are working, eating, sleeping, dealing with kids / wife / husband / lover / ex-lover / parents and so on in the trials of life...
Participation in our forum has to come out of the leftover personal pleasure time that we have and sometimes we don't get too much...
Remember its not JUST 6 Million Users...
… its 6 Million of the TOP Professional Designers / Engineers / Draftsman ( and women) / and Artists on the planet (and off too)…
So, my friend, we all care, but we have a lot of other things to do first before we get to sit, relax, enjoy and participate... Sorry
(Well not really …… and sometimes the munchkin steals my computer to play games on it and my personal time is kinda shot to heck !)
I'll agree that six million accounts have been created, but how many are dead? How many were used once? How many are spammers? How many are duplicate accounts?
Once the "bad" accounts are removed from the tally, the number of members is lower. Now try to calculate (or even define) "active members". That value is again much lower.
Hello Michael,
I know the feeling my little one takes over the computer and sometimes takes over the entire lab.
Hello Fred nice to her from you again,
Yes it seems a little strange to me.
I was wondering if there was something wrong with the notifications on the website. I know sometimes I don't even get notifications for members posting on my own group let alone groups I have joined.
If there are 6 million members statistically there should be a lot of activity.
Kudos to the little mad scientists that keep us busy …. !!!!
For perspective, and adding to the already mentioned - I've had a lot of clients sign up for GrabCAD. They don't do much with their profile just work with me on Workbench. So a small portion of the "ghosts" could be these members who use GrabCADs SaaS services like Workbench and Print. I assume there's others like myself inflating the numbers a bit with who we bring here to work on projects. For instance, I've brought 32 clients here in a few years time. They're not out liking my models, just using the said services so we can work through a project.
However, I do see plenty of members who just joined to download a model. They're not here to upload, just download, and for various reasons.
There's also Zimple. They've been data mining GrabAD's website to create a 3D search engine. IMO, that kinda traffic will only bring active downloaders, not contributors or current members. Active users is where its at!
In that case it is nice of you to come out SayKay
It does seem active or should I say contributing members are just the tip of the iceberg with (as highlighted by Tommy & FredSWUG) a majority under the surface in it for ulterior personal reasons without a social commitment to the community. Quantity over Quality appears to be the emphasis when it comes to membership as I see it as of lately of GRABCAD. I understand the need to have a large membership base however if it is diluted too much with ones that take away instead of contributing, this will weaken the organization. Further to that you will not have a strong foundation that could possibly collapse like a house of cards from disillusioned members walking away. If not careful, continued GRABCAD direction may cause members to create their own private forums to share within the confines of such as a way to protect against improper use of personally created data. Hopefully GRABCAD will focus on developing the quality of members & instilling a sense of civic responsibility. You will always have noncontributing members or persons that use the freely available data for illicit means but there is a need to balance the ratios presently experienced. I feel GRABCAD should have a serious discussion on how to address this as well as other already raised issues. Just saying that they are looking into the issues does not encourage the confidence needed. Fanfare for membership extent comes across as a little dishonest as per the discussion here on actual active participation. I really would like to see some action by GRABCAD soon. A new badge on the site just doesn’t cut it for me and frankly isn’t worth the 3d print that it has not been printed on.
Regards & with best intentions : Mark Bruton
P.S. ; Tommy quite enjoy your content and have benefited from information passed on for UnReal Engine and now Zimple.
"However, I do see plenty of members who just joined to download a model. They're not here to upload, just download, and for various reasons."
This is me. Totally for a long time I only downloaded models to research them and play with ideas. Joining the community and adding to the community was not even on my radar.
GrabCAD is what the name implies. Grad a CAD model and go play. Not everybody is into community discussions or groups.
