I see a "member quality" rating as impossible to manage. Who's rating the "quality" of a model uploaded? It's easy to think "Likes" would help but the Like system is dysfunctional. Look at the Likes obtained by a clickbait image (example here that 47 members liked despite the images having no relation to the CAD data: https://grabcad.com/library/tiny-house-27)
Do away with Likes.
Rule number one on GrabCAD should be don't upload models with commercial value.
Why are members upset when their model is "misused"? You lost control of the model when it was uploaded. Read terms of use: https://grabcad.com/terms (sections 6.1, 6.2)
Adding a feature to allow/prevent some members from downloading models is a terrible idea. How many models in the library are abandoned by people who left this site? Do we want to request permission to download a model from someone that's not visited GrabCAD in 5 years?
The library is the one portion of this site that functions and has value, let's not lose it too.
GrabCADs remaining value (to me) comes by saving time. I don't need to reinvent the wheel by modeling standard parts when I can download them. Mark's Zarges Case Handle is a perfect example: https://grabcad.com/library/zarges-case-handle-1
But Mark has deleted the 3D models to protect the file from misuse? It's a commercial product that was measured, modeled, and uploaded. The point of uploading it was so other people could download and use it. Apart from re-uploading the model as their own I can't see any way to "misuse" the model. If someone did re-upload the model it would be 100% more useful than Mark's since it could be used.
PS : My profile and FredSWUG is no longer listed in the engineer's section = why ? Even high profile accounts like 'singlefonts' doesn't show up either !!
There's a bunch of profiles missing.
Another side effect is library models of anyone missing from the Engineers section can't be found.
" No results but clearly you've made the model: https://grabcad.com/library/ceramic-antenna-dog-bone-insulator-1
It likely warrants a new post to report rather than being in this one about not caring about the rules anymore.
Agreed ! Anyone that you know other than Kesa to inform ?
Somebody will eventually see the post. Otherwise an email to the support account could work. I've not used the email in a while. It seems better to post in the Group as people can add additional information.
This is a cool idea!
Badge for the elusive model )))
New challenge. Like an invisible model
I just checked it at 3:25 AM PDT (6:25 AM EDT) and it seems to be back to normal.
No still not corrected only partially !! I will check back later . . .
Brilliant answer, man! But I'm afraid the admins will turn to paid accounts in attempt to get rid of „leeches” as you rightfully called them.
Hello Everyone.
Hope you had a good labor day weekend. Fred and Steven I will let my tech team know that profiles are missing from the engineer's page.
If there is any other issues please let me know. We are here to help.
Best

I don’t know if it’s part of the same problem but models posted by the related engineers are missing from all search results. That includes: recent, most popular, most liked etc. from the basic library search.
To clarify, it seems that -some- models show up in -some- types of searches but there doesn’t seem to be any logic to it. Also, many keyword searches turn up empty or return only partial results even though I know there should be pages of results. Not just for my models but many others as well.

Another user trying to sell models, still cannot understand how it is so difficult to find them?
I hate beggars and „CAD shoplifters”. And I despise those who endorse such behavior, a.k.a. admin(s). I had more than 20 models here, until 1-2 years ago; mostly hobby and simple things, sort of self-training. But some were complex projects, former job assignments which I was particularly proud of - but of course, did not want to break any confidentiality rule, also. So I put only assembly file, or pictures, or stp file... This was *disappointing* for that kind of beggars I was mentioning (their vast majority coming from SE Asia, if any relevance). When begging did not work on PMs, they started to file complaints to that admin who demanded me to make whole prjs available, in the name of free circulation of tech info, or to take them down... so down it was.
I am for free circulation of tech info, but NOT in one direction only - most of them had empty profiles and did not even bothered to give a like to most of models they were „borrowing”. Some might call me arrogant for this - I don't give a f**k! :P
I agree whole-heartedly !!
The first item on the agenda for grabCAD to clean up its act is to start getting rid of all of the useless DEAD accounts and create a higher level of quality for those that contribute. Minimum time frame for keeping an account active and alive is 2 years AND with at least ONE CAD model (not pictures ! ). If there are no models after 2 years, then those accounts should be killed off. Other FAKE and advertising accounts need to be reported such that they are scrubbed off quickly (within a month or sooner).
Next I think that the bar needs to be raised for the award merits and ONE of anything does NOT deserve any form of award !! The race-to-the-bottom claiming equality for all is ridiculous, since the entire systems is based upon LIKES and DOWNLOADS. People vote with their money and their time. The fact is that if someone took the time to download a model, then it is blatantly obvious that they LIKE the damn model !!
I believe if these two topics are covered then most of grabcad can come together and be better for it. But I believe that these are the minimum urgent needs.
One other thing is that everyone should understand completely that ALL MODELS WILL BE COPIED AND USED ANYWHERE. Therefore if it is IP that you do not want to share of rights or whatever, DO NOT POST IT as people worldwide are coming here to use your models for school and professional work and THEY WILL COPY IT AND CLAIM IT AS THEIRS !!
I think that merging all parts as a block STEP model may be the best way to protect IP if you need to share it. But be forewarned that any native CAD database models will be copied and open to modification.

why do you follow engineers on Grabcad even they didn't upload any models???
GrabCAD's model library is open to everyone that makes an account. If you don't want a model "stolen" don't put it online.
GrabCAD should consider bringing back the Rendering/Images tab to user profiles. It would allow members to showcase images of their work that can't otherwise be uploaded to the Library.
Putting "broken models" on GrabCAD is not a solution. Partial assemblies, merged step files, pictures only...etc it's just filling the library with crap. GrabCAD even has rules against posting such junk.
Being able to download native CAD models is a huge benefit for members learning how to create similar designs.
Consider a library where you get books. Do they require each borrower to write and submit a book before being allowed to borrow a book? Does the library glue book pages together to "protect" the content of their books? Must you be a library patron for X years before being allowed to borrow a book?
GrabCAD has many fake/dead accounts. Does deleting them do anything? A new account can be created in five minutes.
Rewarding members with badges for uploading one model or asking one question is silly. There was/is a tutorial for new members that lead them through such events to introduce them to the site. Completing the tutorial rewarded them with GrabCAD Points which is a better solution. Then again the badge system has been broken for two years maybe scrap it at this point?
Downloading and liking a model are not the same thing. If somebody downloads a model and finds it is poorly made, missing parts, or looks nothing like the Library image then it was downloaded but does not deserve to be liked.
The majority of Library complaints on this site come from members unhappy with the download to Like ratio. If someone likes a model encourage them to leave a comment. I'd rather receive a comment over someone clicking the Like button. That ties in with Stephen's idea of voting with time. If they take the time to write a comment then they must like it a lot more compared to pressing the like button that takes one second.
I don't agree with Fred on the comment "GrabCAD has many fake/dead accounts. Does deleting them do anything? A new account can be created in five minutes."
Yes they can, but it will eliminate MILLIONS of DEAD and FAKE accounts !! - That's the point entirely - time to purge the system of bad accounts and create a format for moving forward !!
This is exactly why any account over 2 years (or even 1 year) has had PLENTY of time to upload models. If there is no content -POOF- the account deleted and gone - less to worry about and less server hard drive space.
If someone decides to come back and create a real account (one that has real CAD models), then they can do so, but time to stop the nonsense !!
There could be millions of fake accounts. I don't see what is gained by deleting the accounts. Maybe I'm not seeing the reason(s)? Let's say 2 million fake accounts are deleted tonight. What change will that make? I say none.
There is no requirement to upload models to GrabCAD, answer questions, or participate in any other way. If someone only downloads models that's their choice.
I agree this would be a better site if the focus was on quality over quantity but that's hard to measure. It's easy for GrabCAD to say "X million of users and a Library of Y million parts.
It's also difficult to get a consensus on what a "quality model" in the library is.
GrabCAD has millions of users with different skills, interests, and CAD software. I'd find a tutorial model made by a beginner in FreeCAD to be 100% useless. Just like I'm sure many of my own models are useless for other members.
If GrabCAD required members to upload models we'd just see more cubes, spheres, and copy/paste models in the library to get past an upload requirement.
More amazing contributors who are allowed to post directly after creating an account.
More proof that the GrabCAD staff doesn't care. These "questions" and the poster should have deleted by the staff immediately. Maybe the staff is waiting for Kesa to tell them. Or maybe they are busy responding to all the reports they've received.
(why am I wasting my time responding to this? Why am I wasting my time accessing GrabCAD?
Jack ;
Your question answers itself !!
The mere fact that you feel compelled to reply and add value by deciding the right course of action *shows* that you care ; whether you realize it or not.
You like so many other contributors actually *care* and that is obvious and apparent. This comes from your years of dedication to your work, craft, and art demanded in a profession that values it.
The showcase here on grabcad is just an extension of the values that the person already has, nothing more. Therefore those who contribute nothing and take everything are a dismal example of their core values as well as their skillset talents.
Those who contribute do it because they can and it provides enjoyment to help others as well as showcase their interests and skills in CAD modeling.
GrabCAD as a website needs to promote this set of values and also encourage it for it to have any meaning and as well as for it to grow.
Well... It looks like I'm late to a heck of a party. I'll apologize if what I say is redundant. I did read a fair few post, but not all of them.
Man do I have my own terrible solutions, and I do mean that.
At the end of the day, I have a hard time blaming GRABCAD for the issues that we as a community are facing. They do truly have limited resources for the size of the website. Looking at the last 24 hours, right around 100 models were uploaded. I don't want to comb through 100 models a day to see if they are all real. I have no idea how many accounts are made in a day, but I'd hate to have to go through each one a month after to see if they've posted and delete them (I guess a piece of software might handle this but then they'd just steal a model and upload it, or their damage would already be done (spam).
I think the real issue is manpower. They need to more resources. I have three proposed solutions for this. Two of which even I hate.
One: Volunteer Community Admins. People on this list see the issue everyday and are upset. I think that a select list of users should be given heighted rights to oversee and moderate the communities. I think that they they could either take over the right to either see the spam notices and judge yes or no to the spam, or if more then three of them report a model as spam it is automatically hidden/removed from the site. I think by requiring 3 (or more) peoples vote it would mitigate abuse of the power. I'm not accusing anyone of that personally, I just now that if I was one, I'd probably ban half the guns that keep popping up across my screen as I find them repetitive and dangerous (not owning them, building them: please go through licensed and trained gunsmiths).
Two: User Wall/Ramping Usage. You guys have talked about this, I have my own spin, but I'm not going to waste paper.
Three: (Man I hate this) Pay wall. I'm not saying a monthly due, and I'm not talking much, and I really regret writing this as I feel like if it comes to fruition I'll be blamed for it, hard. If GRABCAD put in a 1.00 Dollar, Euro, whatever, charge for making a new profile (existing profiles for pay on the first of next year) this would do two things. It would give them an influx of capital to hopefully higher new moderators and it would make it less likely for bad users to create spam accounts. Maybe make a free tier where you can see, but not download, to try to drum up new members, or after you post ten models you don't have to pay to download, IDK. As long as it's not 5.99 a month to be here, I'd be ok to add my buck to the pot to deter the rabble. (don't get me wrong, I'll leave if it's an ongoing membership fee).
The only other Idea I have is ads, and I hate ads.
Thomas, it was because of people like you that I had to restrict the removal by voting to three people.
What do you dislike about the Military category? On the site, this is mainly a historical reconstruction, and the fact that something new is being invented causes laughter and bewilderment.
In evolutionary terms, the person that you are, you, has been shaped by only two things, these are fire and weapons. Man did not invent fire. From the invention of stone choppers to the development of the technology of silicon knives of the Acheulean era, the level of intellectual efforts invested by humanity can be compared only with the invention of the wheel (by the way, for war chariots) and man's flight into space. This is what made it possible to remove the chewing comb from the head, freeing up space for the brains, making a modern human from Australopithecus, turning it from an omnivorous gatherer into an ultra-predator.
Many positive things have come to our world precisely thanks to weapons: nuclear energy, the Internet in which we communicate, etc. Any phenomenon has both positive aspects and their dialectical negation, that is, negative aspects. There is no one without the other.
Think about it.
In addition, I want to say that not everything suits me in the "Military" category either. For example this: https://grabcad.com/library/gott-mit-uns-1
What is posted by some neo-Nazi from Ukraine. It seems like just a buckle and a very ancient motto, but it was worn by the soldiers of the Wehrmacht during the Second World War, who killed millions of innocent people. For me, such Nazi symbols are unacceptable. This is not what I want to see on the site. But the administration doesn't care about that. Apparently, they have a higher tolerance for the propaganda of Nazism than for the attempts of an O-Town user to come up with a sporting rifle. Which, with all due respect to him, will never shoot.
So, on one side of the scale, we have a developer-engineer removed from the site whose work is being deleted, and on the other, a fascist symbol from the point of view of engineering does not carry anything useful except propaganda of Nazism.
There is a reason to think about the priorities placed on the site. None of the Staff team will be engaged in identifying such offensive things that are unacceptable for a certain category of users. They don't have time for this. This can only be solved by the process of self-regulation of users.
