Can just anyone add a banner?  Or, do I have to join the group first?

Or, do I have to be the  group owner?

It is a great implementation, but the result is very little visible, I have tried with different images in the specified resolution, with different backgrounds and even though the results are not good, with difficulty you can see the cover, you also have to try 2 or 4 times for the change to be effective.

You have to be a group owner to change a banner for a group.

You appear to be uploading a picture with a transparent background. Make the background white (or black and change the colours of the text to be brighter) in your image editing app, and it should be much more visible. However, I am working on making the cover images a bit more visible as, currently, the black gradient overlay is, indeed, a bit extreme.

As far as placement goes, since the design is responsive, there's not much we can do to improve it further - try to keep the important bits near the centre, and it should work.

Finally, I finished the banner for Inventor Group. Please, you all, take a look and modify live the width of the window with Inventor Group to see that nothing in the middle is covered by the pictures inside. This was my challenge. I used a banner with 2386x487 pixels (at 72 pixels/inch resolution, of course). This creates room for moving and center the image (I placed it at the top position before saving the banner). The pictures inside my banner are vertically centered and placed horizontally between pixels 350-750 on the left and 1370-1860 on the right. Good luck!

After waiting for 15 minutes till the 35 MB file got uploaded, then another couple of minutes till it was saved, I reaslized that GIFs aren't - yet - supported as group banners...

Very true. We haven't thought of making Gifs supported for the banners but it's possible to be able to support that in the future.
