GrabCAD Community User Group

I would like to choose the order my projects are shown. Just sorting them by date, downloads, or likes does not put them in the best order to show off skills. And maybe even into folders...

Stephen, How would you want to sort them?

• It would be great to have control over which projects are featured on the Engineers, or Likes pages.
• It may also be helpful to be able to add more links to other sites in the profile. Personal blog, company site, Linkedin, Etsy... whatever someone uses to build their online brand/personality. There is a spot for Twitter and a webpage already.
• Something should be done with the Renderings tab. I know it is not exactly a part of the profile, but it kind of ties in as a way to highlight projects which the user did not model, but only rendered.
• I've always felt the "Work Experience" section ends up listing stuff in reverse chronological order. Then once it is in there, it is a hassle to try and change it.
• Also under Work Experience, the formatting has a mind of its own. It is very difficult to get text with line breaks. I resorted to adding a bunch of periods, but now those are broken as it seems the width of the text area has changed.
• Pressing the "Edit" button is OK, but it only allows about three lines of text to be seen at once. Seeing more lines would make edits easier.
• Can the awesome new text formatting options from Groups be sent over to the Profile pages?
• I tried to fill out the Education field today, but it never stuck.

Here are examples of the highlighted projects from a Likes page, and the Engineers page. I'm not sure how the projects are picked, but it differs between pages, and seems to change often.

I would like if I can see who are downloading our projects just how we see the likes.

I think that would be a cool feature as well, but I can also see it leading to lots of personal messages being sent i.e.

"I see you downloaded my model. Why haven't you pressed the Like button yet? Don't you like my model?".

Can more statistics be added to the profile page? Right now they consist of:

Statistics

• 20028 GrabCAD score
• 5202 profile views
• 15779 times models downloaded
• 1124 comments left
• Member since February 25, 2013

If I go to the Engineers portion of the site I can get some additional statistics:

• 103 models
• 19 tutorials
• 996 answers
• 194 followers

It seems odd to have the data in two different locations. If someone views my profile, I'd want them to see I'm active with posting answers, and have created some tutorials.

I'm not sure if the site keeps track of any other interesting stats that are not on these two pages, but if so, maybe allow members to turn them on/off as desired? Engineers love statistics for everything. I ran mouse/keyboard trackers with a several coworkers once to see how far our mice moved, we clicked, and typed on the keyboard. They all had close to 100,000 keyboard presses, and I only had 30,000. I had to show them how I'm lazy and simply copy/paste as much as possible :)

For profiles, I think it would be awesome if:

• Showing related models by other people on the right side would make picking models easier instead of necessarily going back to the library
• The ability to use .gifs as model thumbnails doesn't seem to work too well. A lot of the background colours become warped as the animation progresses.
• A profile's followers were displayed somewhere near the bottom, something similar to a friends list
• Perhaps a community rating system for individual profiles (0-100 scale)

I think GrabCAD may have done this in the past, but what about a badge, or score that would motivate people to put some information in their profiles?

Many profiles are left empty. Maybe if a profile were filled out completely it would lead to "good citizen" or some other badge?

Another possibility is assigning a percentage value to profile completion. Most people like to see 100% more than 0%, so it might motivate some to put in at least some basic information.

I do think that getting people to complete their profiles would be just as valuable as additional profile features.
