That’s not noise from compression. That’s pixelation resulting from scaling down the resolution. If you’re doing a screen grab of a thumbnail what you’re going to get is the result of your display resolution and not necessarily the result of the actual image resolution.

I don't know how to differentiate noise from compression vs. noise from scaling. Either way the images a noisy.

The image below appears to have a watermark. I can't read the text, but it looks like a "b" just to the right of the thumb. There are more partial "letters" to the left and right of the "b"

We haven't made any changes to our image compression methods, and the underlying library for it also hasn't changed nor been recently enough updated.

From what I can tell, however, it does seem to be downscaling artefacts rather than compression artefacts - if there's any information that isn't visible on the large version as it's small and not very contrasty, it'll be magnified when it's downscaled (as the pixels will be bigger).
