Hello GrabCAD Community,
This year we are going to be adding some exciting new improvements to the GrabCAD Community, we are starting off with a new Badge system. This new Badge system will replace many of our manual badges of the past with automated badges. This new Badge system will also allow you to level up your badges by taking additional actions in the Community.
As our new Badge system rolls out, we wanted to make ensure that you - as one of our most active users – know what we're changing.
Our first badge that we are adding that utilizes this new leveling system will replace the Active Uploader Badge and the Share Master Badge to create a new badge, the Upload Master Badge.
This Upload Master badge is a level based badge and will have 5 levels, each with a new design to help show off to the rest of the Community. You increase your level of your Upload Master Badge by uploading more models into the GrabCAD Community.
Please let me know your thought and I hope you enjoy our new badge! There will be future badges this year that follow this leveling system so be on the lookout for more updates.
Thanks,
Kesa
GrabCAD Community Manager
P.S.
Whoever didn’t get the badge yet should upload something for the awarding to take place on your Account.
Looks good Kesa!
Does the number on the badge indicate how many uploads are required to earn the badge?
The Upload Master 3 Badge shows a number of 20 but in the description it is said, that 25 uploads are required. Must be a mistake?
The new badge system is cool though!
Kesa, I don’t want to seem like a harsh critic, but these are terrible icons, not only in terms of design, but also in psychology with logic. The text may contain stylistic errors - this is a machine translation. Take it as constructive criticism from a person who has done a lot of things in life. Among other things: the creation of logos, games and websites, as well as a lot of drawing people learning classical drawing.
1) For the sake of the shape of the 3d cube, you have not drawn the "Giving Hand", but the "Taking (Raking) Hand". For example, this form of hand is often asked for alms, when something is poured into the hand, swept crumbs from the table. For example:
This immediately violates the logic of the icon in my opinion. Because they are awarded for what you give. And even if a person looking at your hand from the icon cannot express it in words, people read the physiognomy of the face, hand gestures and their shape with the subconscious. Try to give something to a person from a pure heart with an outstretched hand and you will understand what I am talking about. Or look at the pictures of old European masters with the story "Annunciation". I do not want to describe here the form of the "Giving Hand". For example: (https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR2O7p8pFgLbmHvctC4CcSgTv1quqV7c_Hn98KrPGSKgiQmEC4J)
The difference seems to be not great, but I assure you it is huge!
2) What is your logic in choosing the background of the icon? If the first two and the last correlate with the colors of the site, then why are the middle two icons gold? It kills the logic of perception! All people watch the Olympics and know that there is bronze, silver and gold. It would be possible to deposit platinum, copper, another rare earth metal, or precious stones if you already have five marks. What it is now looks like - gray, gray, gold, gold, black. Maybe this is just not clear to me!?
3) Just want to say that the numbers on the icons are just awful. But again it remains a mystery to me why there are numbers on 4 signs, but not on the first one !? Why??????
This is the main thing that I did not like or that I did not understand. I apologize if I am upset. I definitely did not want this. If you want, then you can contact me, I have ideas about how to make the signs and the whole system more logical and intuitive for everyone, despite the big culturological differences.
This might be a type out in the code. I will let the Tech team know.
"Terrible" might be a bit strong, but there is always room for improvement.
I have no doubt the GC staff can handle the design of the badges, but this could be an opportunity for a GC related Challenge.
Giving vs. taking hand, I can see it both ways. Maybe this is a cultural thing which some people are more cognizant of. I perceive the current design as more of a friendly gesture (to give with palm up) like giving a gift to a friend, or equal. Giving with palm down represents (to me) the giving of charity, or represents a gift between different classes (i.e. a lord giving a gift to a servant).
The colors confused me a little too. But I guess we are going for the exclusivenAmerican Express Centurion card look?
When I heard about the tiered badge setup I imagined it like the military ribbon system where receiving the same ribbon multiple times equates to adding stars to the ribbon.
It's interesting to see a hexagon used too. Badges have always been circles, does this pave the way for other shapes as well.
The numbers make sense as a means to identify the different levels of the badge. It could be said that if the numbers are needed, then other indicators (color, logo, shape...etc.) are not working. I think the numbers are needed right now to differentiate the badges.
Here's an example of military ribbons with stars:
Another way to distinguish tiers of a badge can be done by adding layers. Below is an example of a military badge to which additional tiers (or in this case qualifications) can be added to to:
I already wrote that this is google machine translation. Possible stylistic mistakes and apparently the words are substituted so that they distort the essence of what I have written.
1) What I didn't exactly write about was (i.e. a lord giving a gift to a servant). I do not know how it could be so understood! I wrote about the shape of the hand and if you change the angles of the fingers and the general position of the hand, it will be more like a “giving hand”.
1.1) Your message about "American Express Express Centurion" - did not understand at all.
2) I have no doubt that GrabCAD itself can fully cope with the development of its signs. I expressed my opinion because I have successful experience in such developments.
3) If you become attached to the shape of a 3D Cuba, which is very important for GrabCAD, the first thing that comes to mind is:
Make something like a 3D spatial graph in the shape of a cube. In the 2D view, this will be a hexagon.
The grid breakdown 5x5x5 as it is assumed a five-step system. The grid can be grayed out and filled as the icon level is increased with GrabCAD brand red cubes. This design will remove all the issues with the logic in the icon. More red cubes - more models laid out the owner of the icon. It's easier nowhere. Five steps of filling remove any need for figures. In my opinion it is very logical, simple and clear. The holder of a fully filled cube will have the highest badge. You can enter different colors as you fill the cube, but it seems to me that this will lead to false associations with the "Rubik's Cube".
4) I find your idea with army symbolism not quite appropriate, precisely because of cultural differences. a) In many armies of the world, their system. b) Not everyone is familiar with the insignia of even their armed forces in view of at least gender differences. c) For some, certain signs may have a negative meaning.
5) I repeat. I did not want to offend anyone. Apparently it is necessary to write a less literary language.
Here's a quick representation of what I meant by adding stars (or some other designation) to the badge. This allows each tier to be visibly identified without a need for colors or numbers. Colors or numbers can still be used, but a system without numbers is ideal since it allows for future changes without the need to change each image.
I'd say a pentagon (or cube, or circle) makes the most sense if five tiers are used, but a hexagon can work too.
The "10K" on the old Sharemaster badge caused a lot of confusion when it was realized that "10K" downloads had no relevance, and it was 100 uploads which triggered the badge.
I'm happy with whatever system is used.
One interesting result of this badge is the breakdown of numbers.
I would have guessed the number of members earning the tier one badge to be at least 10x higher.
Summing all the badge values gives a number around 13,000 for everyone that has uploaded at least one model. But out of ~5,000,000 members, that's a really low percentage (.25%?) who upload models. Those members with 1,000+ models will skew that percentage even lower.
It would be great to honor those 1,000+ model contributors with some type of reward. But at the same time there needs to be some mechanism to prevent someone from uploading 100, or 1,000 "cubes" to "earn" a badge.
Maybe there needs to be more emphasis on adding models to the library, or site participation in general? If fewer than 1% of members are contributing to the library, think of all the models, answers, and discussions we are not seeing.
Also, can the "See all badges" link be added to the Upload Master page? Going there is sort of a dead end now.
Suppose, when I have 101 model, will be badge I have will be replaced by fifth level badge or does it add on to it.
It looks like the lower tier badge is replaced with the higher tier badge when enough models are uploaded.
I don't think the hand's design affects the badge that much; it isn't that obvious...
The strange colour scheme is what I find pretty obvious...
I believe gold is the most precious - unless we added some gems, rubies, diamonds, etc. -, so it should've been in the highest level.
I also find the difference in the no. of models for each level very small; I'd suggest (10-50-100-250-500)...
1 is so small, so I removed it. Besides, you get 40 points after uploading your first model which seems to be enough.
Yes it does seem funny to get an "UPLOAD MASTER" badge after only 1 upload, but it does seem that GRABCAD is trying to get accounts to be more interactive. In return it would be nice to see recognition given to models/members with a lot of downloads. Given the fact that some members will not acknowledge through a "LIKE" for the time & effort it takes in producing a model by others they download from.
I do like that design. This is just Phase 1. Something are subject to change but thanks for helping us go in the right direction with your feedback.
I have 21 models uploaded so far but I don't see any badge in my profile. What did I miss ?
Here is a quick visualization of the idea about which I wrote above.
I deliberately do not use the numbers on the icons. They have nothing. By the visual mass of the cubes laid out, this is clearly seen and so. In my opinion, such a design motivates the user to get such an icon.
Just in case, the design of each sign contains a certain number of cubes-downloads (1,5,20,50,100)
Write what you think about this idea!
Nice idea, but not good for a badge...
A badge needs to be simple, yet good-looking & eye-catching.
This is very simple, but not good-looking.
Yahya, I always advocate criticism. It allows us to make our work better. I am always grateful to people who have spent time studying my work and shared their experiences. What you wrote is your opinion (value judgment) unwarranted. Scientific criticism does not operate on the terms "Like" - "Not Like"
I do not want to describe the whole design of icons, but believe that these are not just cubes laid out in another Cuba. The icons contain deep psychological motives that exist in a person since ancient times, they will work with the subconscious of the end user. One of these principles for example laid in the design of the icon level 5. Incomplete! Subconsciously, you understand that the figure of a large cube is not finished, the work has not been completed, you need to do something else, this is not yet the final. Every time looking at the sign, your subconscious will give you this signal. Explain the advantages of this approach hopefully unnecessary.
I look forward to hearing from you a real critique of the idea! Because it may look differently, and it does not make sense to discuss the first sketch.
This is all amazing feedback. Thank you everyone. We will we talking about everything that was stated in here internally when we move forward with the new badges.

I observe a strange phenomenon. I do not see the likes and emoji under my posts in this thread. After the message is written, they are there, and then disappear. And under the messages of other users of the Like, I see. In my "Notifications" there are messages about the action, but they are not on the discussion page. Very strange! I do not want to deal with the "Conspiracy Theories";))) - most likely this is just a technical error, which will soon be resolved. Just in case, I took a few screenshots if you have any questions.
I get your point and like it (said so before), but it - unfortunately - lacks many things, including being good-looking & eye-catching...
If the cubes were evenly arranged - as if they were growing from a corner - the looks will be definitely better.
Check this GIF...
Happened before...
Check this discussion.
Are all these little cubes going to be visible when they are inside the small cube in the "giving hand" logo?
How will this "filled cube" icon apply to other multi-level badges in the future?
(Personally, I like Fred's multiple star method)
His point is to remove the hand, so the cubes will be the badge...
BTW, I like the current version (although having some points that I've mentioned above). I only uploaded that GIF to edit his design, nothing more.
Probably it is worth describing a large (wide) associative series which is embedded in the idea of my icon. This will ultimately help make the right decision makers.
1) It corresponds to the overall minimalistic design of the GrabCAD website and the overall color.
2) Uses finite elements of site design. Such as the Sign "My Models" in the form of a cube.
3) It has a general shape and color scheme with an animated "Load" icon that you see when loading the page.
4) The gray grid of a large 3D Cuba has direct associations to the 3D printer's print area, which for Stratasys will not be the last
5) The visual filling of the space is done in such a way that you don’t have any questions what level the icon is a) for any resolution of the final image b) which level is higher.
6) The signs laid down the principles of working with the subconscious. Aims to achieve the full effect of the introduction of a new system of signs. I cannot describe them here - this is not correct (not fair) in relation to the end user. Believe them there is more than one.
This is if not given in detail.
That GIF is rubbish in both design & quality...
I only made it as a representation of the corner arrangement which seems better in my opinion.
As for my study, I don't and won't study logo designing or any type of related designing. Simply, not my hobby.
As for your arrangement, it seems random to me.
If you don't mind, what is it based on?
Located 3D cubes based on scientific papers on the "Анализ структуры закономерностей золотого сечения и зеркальной симметрии – Analysis of the structures of the laws of the golden section and mirror symmetry" This is somewhat of what I advised you to read before.
Just in case I have been doing graphic design for more than 20 years. To have and express my opinion based on “For nothing” for me is equal to “Zero”.
It is not the first time that I come across you in the discussion and I can say that you have a steady tendency to impose your opinion, ignoring what is written to you in response. Think about it.
Best wishes.

I am curious if this is just a brief article on the subject, and if a book with the title of METAPHYSICS OF NATURAL ARCHETYPES OF CULTURE: DYNAMICS AND STATIC - HARMONY OF DISHARMONIOUS exists. The above research paper was the only result I found.
This is a link to an article exploring the texts of Russian poets Pushkin and Lermontov. ;))) Using a similar "Понятийный аппарат" conceptual apparatus, that is, operating on the same principles. What I see in the formulas and the general direction is very similar. Art is everywhere Art. Perhaps this is due to the fact that it was written by the Professor of the military institute. It probably has something to do with architecture. Perhaps a military engineer. Very interesting article! Never heard of it. Thank!!!
P.S. Google probably substitutes for translation what the first one found on the web. I remember, as soon as I began to enter the name, he immediately offered it to me and I chose it. It is therefore written through Capslock.
In my text there are probably a lot of inaccuracies and idiotic nonsense. As if he wrote a child or a moron. For example in Russian to the word cube "куб", under certain conditions, the ending "a" is added "куба" and Google translates it already as the name of the country "Cuba". For a long time I could not understand why, when translating backward, the letters change to uppercase. ))))
