Why are scans on the model of the month Page ? Although I find the Scans very good, I don't see what they have to do with Modeling where a persons skill and knowledge has gone into their Model. Might as well be Pictures.
I agree with you...
I do enjoy their precision, accuracy and looks, but I cannot stop myself from thinking of them as incomparable with real models.
My definition of a real model is a model that has been thought of, designed and then uploaded to the site.
Scans are cool, but not as cool as real models.
BTW, I don't want them to be banned, but to be hidden from the front page and leave the chance for other real models to be shown.
I wouldn’t mind if the scan models could be posable, like a plastic kit figure. Not sure the models would be happy supplying just an arm and a leg, but seems to be the cost of the technology.
To be "posable", they have to cut the scanned model's limbs, then add (design) joints.
That would put some of the CAD skill back in. A range of faces like they do for the animation models (ParaNorman). Could make a nice tutorial for designers and animators.
There is possibly quite a bit of time and skill involved in processing the scan data into these clean models.
I get that CAD is generally about designing stuff, but these models are pretty handy to add in for a sense of scale for other parts and assemblies.
They are certainly more interesting too look at than the 2D versions I posted a while back:
We've already lost "dangerous" models from the main library page. If people like and download these 3D people, let's keep them up there.

this is true but even the owner say´s "I was given this source file, so the origins of it are unknown"
Dont get me wrong I like the files very much but I still think that people´s models who have spent a lot of time effort and Skill should be the files on the opening page.
I agree the people models have often taken over the front page, but it is impossible to predict what models will be popular on this site. I've spent dozens of hours modeling and rendering something to get a few dozen likes or downloads. Other times I'll model a caster wheel, or a length of chain in an hour and they go straight to the front page. GrabCAD is weird, but the masses have spoken, they want models of people.
Per the Older Man model:
"The file has been re-meshed, simplified and converted to a NURBS solid"
mcramblet looks to be skilled in the workflow to convert these scans into nurbs. It can be a rather tedious process of refinement and error repair.
I agree the data is not "CAD" in the way most often found on this site, but the skill set used to edit and repair this data is valuable.
This may be one of those times where my suggestion for an ignore button would be handy. Press it, and POOF. No more models or other content from the ignored user(s) would be seen.
That makes a lot of sense to me!
Ok point taken, thanks for comments .It also says Most popular models so I suppose thats ok.
Nice suggestion, @fredswug-1
