Include a link to go back to the group section homepage when on a specific group page.
we have this link "Back to Discussions list" here - very convenient, can we add a similar one "Back to Groups list" above the discussions list as well?
I would love to be able to like Anna's comment. I found myself looking to like or upvote her comment, but I wasn't able to.
Inviting people would also be great! I know a few people who I would like to invite to the group I just started.
For the landing page of this group, I can only get here if I click on the text itself. Maybe also if you clicked on the word ballon to comment it might help to bring you here.
This would be great site wide, but a simple text editor in this window would be great.
Bold, Underline, the ability to add an image in line with the text, Bullets, Numbered Lists....etc. Nothing extreme or annoying like flashing fonts, just the basic functionality that might be found in an online email system.
I wrote the following in Word just to see if the formatting carries over:
Bold
Underline
Strike through
• Bullet list
o Item one
o Item two
o Item three
Not really :(
The thumbnail image that you choose for your group doesn't resize when you go into the group. The GrabCAD Print group is a good example.
Fred, hopefully, we can add more editing capabilities soon.
Abe, that is intentional. it fills the square with the image. Otherwise, all thumbnails would be a different size. The ultimate long-term goal is that users can crop their own squares though.
Thanks Mikk.
Notifications seem to work if someone replies to a discussion I have started, so that is good.
But, if someone posts to a discussion that I am part of, there is no notification. Maybe there could be a follow button like the question section has? Or maybe it could auto notify anyone who has posted to the discussion (like the question section does)?
Also, it is not clear what the "latest activity" on the main Groups page is showing. As of now it says the Tiny GrabCAD Challenges discussion had activity 4 hours ago. Going to the discussion page shows the last post was about 15 hours ago.
Some additional thoughts on Groups:
- The ability to attach files and images would be great.
- I'm curious to see what happens when a discussion gets long. Does it scroll downwards forever, or does it split into pages?
- The ability to reply to, or quote from another post might be helpful. As a discussion gets longer I can imagine a time when adding a post at the end of the chain could get confusing to know what post it is in reference to.
- What happens to the content that a group admin deletes? I have some scenarios:
* Spam is posted to the group, the admin deletes it and uses the report function. What does Matt (or someone else) see when they check the reported (but deleted) post?
* Someone writes a post and it is deleted. But why? Maybe there could be a "reason" field to fill out or select from to make it clear why a post was deleted?
* Someone writes a long detailed post, and it is deleted. They may be upset over the deletion, but even more upset that the work/text is now gone. Maybe there could be a way for the author to recover their content? If it is determined it is better suited for another group, then they can repost it, rather than trying to recreate it.
- The little 1" tall text box is not conductive to writing much content at a time. Could this box be 2-3 times taller?
-
include short description of group on groups page to give more information enticing user to learn more
Paul, groups already have a description field that shows on top of the discussions page.
Nesting comments under each comment on the discussion would be nice. that way you could respond to a certain point someone made earlier.
Attaching an image would be helpful for the Printer user groups. If they have an issue with a print and they want to find out why it happened. Including an image could help diagnose the issue.
Is there a way to "invite members" to a group? Thoughts on whether that's valuable functionality? We could just email a link to the group to a friend...so not sure necessary. Just thinkign out loud.
I noticed the group URL is basically the name of the group. Is that best practice in web forum discussion? Should it just be a number to keep it simple? (As an aside, are people able to name their groups with obscenities? Not that they ever would...)
For the list of groups as well as threads within a group, would be good to be able to sort the groups/threads based on most recent activity. Also, will you be able to "pin" certain threads at the top of a discussion board? For example, I may want 2-3 topics to always display at the top of my group. Admin should be the only ones able to do this.
- We haven't build invite functionality and probably will not for time being.
- URLs with real names is a common practice and also good for SEO
- We will add filters for groups probably in next 2-3 weeks before the public launch.
Thanks for feedback Michael
it is good have groups if you could make each group to get permissions before particular person joins it else it will have lots of spam messages filled and spoil the interest of other valuable users.
and i appreciate all your efforts .....
looking forward to help more
Also i want to say that we should not be able to use these groups to popularize our models else people will publish all their models in every group...to make it popular
i have come to know that some users in grabcad are selling the models which we upload in grabcad in other sites without any permissions from the author.
one guy called MIN ALSO has uploaded 9991 models taken from grabcad from users like me, Mahmet, Trinityscp, Ivo jordin etc.
if people uses the design for learning & knowledge upgradation then it is good but if they are using commercially then it is bad.
some fellows earning money from the efforts of GRABCAD team & members of grabcad.
this will not only make the members feel bad but also spoils the name of our community that this site can be used to download cad models for illegal selling of 3d models..
i request GRABCAD community to give licenses for each model uploaded if a person trying to upload the same model (i mean already existing one belongs to others ) then he shouldn't be able to upload it.
pls go through this link and this guys profile all the models is be stolen from grabcad
http://www.mfcad.com/tuzhi/848/415228.html
I always wanted to make this community better just wanted to report these activities to the GRABCAD staff so that they might take any action.
if i was in any of my above sentences please apologize me
thanks & regards,
Dhanasekar Vinayagamoorthy
Thank you for your feedback Dhanasekar!
We do know about the issue of stealing models and we are trying to think about a solution to that. If you have any ideas feel free to send them to me.
Hi Mikk. Can we have tagging option in discussion enabled. Or alternatively we can have "Reply" option in the drop down menu on the right side of the relevant post, just before "Report". It makes addressing someone easy in a very long thread discussion.
Hi Logan,
We are working on reply functionality and hopefully it will be ready next week
Kiran,
You can request a group from the top right corner of groups main page. We wanted to limit new groups in the Beta version so we won't get a lot of similar empty groups.
Spell check is not working... if a word is underlined in red because it is not spelled correctly, when I right click the word to correct it ALL the text in the reply box is cleared...
Okay- Let’s try this again…
I would like to be able to just paste an image into a response.
Has anyone used Slack?
One feature that I would really like on the site (not just in the Groups) is the ability to add images by simply pasting. I am often taking screenshots to answer questions or tutorials. Needing to save a screenshot (or a few) as a separate file and then upload each image separately is a bit of a pain. When using Slack, I can just ctrl-V in the text box and if an image is automatically uploaded...
If you don't receive the email within an hour (and you've checked your Spam folder), email us as confirmation@grabcad.com.
