it is preferred to use helical gears to get smooth start and stop of the system

if you do not have multi speeds operations you can use worm gear system to get the needed speed ratio and torque

One of the benefits of EV technology is the lack of need for a gear box if you design the system correctly.

That said sometimes a gear box is helpful, but don't forget you will need to match the gearbox to at least a single motor through some form of clutch and bell housing. You will need the pattern for adapting the motor to the bell housing and at the other end to the transmission.

The need of gearbox in electrical vehicle is to reduce the hi-RPMs of the motor to reasonable one, performing bigger torque is a good reason too.
