Steps to design something.
What steps should I take to design this phone holder. I want to make a phone holder that mounts to an air vent in my car. Ideally, I will make the phone holder have a stand that is attached to the air vent, since all of my previous ones have fallen off, and I dont want to mount it on the window :p. I attached a picture of the air vent, and I would ideally make the stand so that the air vent still functions

I usually model both parts, provided time allows that, make a assembly to locate the parts and than design the interface part.
In your case may be better to design whole new vent part with feature that can receive the phone holder. but something that would snap into the vent wouldn't be bad choice ether
