How can I convert a duct elbow to sheet metal then flatten for patterning?

Though and old question nobody seems to have answered. I have attached a pdf file that shows the basic method I use to produce sheet metal models of lobsterback bends that can be flattened. I use Alibre Design software but method will work with other 3D CAD packages.
