How to model an aerofoil using coordinates in Solidworks?

Here goes the answer: :

  1. Step 1:

1 – Create a new part and then using the main tool bar of Solidwork go to “Insert”, then “Curve” and finally click on “Curve trough XYZ points…”. The following windows will appear:

  2. Step 2:

2 – Now you should input on the X and Y columns the coordinates that will generate our CLARK Y profile. It should look like that:

  3. Step 3:

To fill the columns you have actually a more expedite mode. If you wish you can create an “Excel” file and paste all the coordinates in the first three columns of the book file. Do not include any column headings, otherwise it won’t work. After you fill it save the book file as a “Formatted Text (Space Delimited)” and then “rename” the extension of the file from “*.prn” to “*.txt”. After prepared in the windows shown in the image above to insert automatically the coordinates you select “browse” an then you choose the file that you have created.
To this document I have attached a text file with the CLARK-Y coordinates ready to insert in Solidworks witch can help you visualizing what I wrote above.

3 – After you fill the columns click “Ok” and now you should have the curve sketch.

  4. Step 4:

4 – Create now a new sketch on the front plane

5 – Apply tool “Convert entities” to the aerofoil curve already created:

  5. Step 5:

6 – Finally apply an extrude to the sketch created using the deph that you want to.

  6. Step 6:

    Here is the final result:

  7. Step 7:

Hope you like it. I know it is simple but may be useful :D
