Split body in SolidWorks

Split body feature and how it works.

  1. Step 1:

This time you are gonna see what does Split feature do in SolidWorks. This feature can be found on Direct Editing toolbar or you can just search for it.

Here on the picture I have got a model, it is all one body.

  2. Step 2:

Now I am gonna split this body in two bodies using this line I drew at the top face.

You can try something by yourself, draw a model and some line like I did.It does not need to be on face, it could be on plane, it just needs to intersect the model.

  3. Step 3:

Now when we did that we can activate the command.

In the Trim Tools window we need to select the sketch (line) and click cut part.

In Resulting Bodies window check those bodies, those are bodies you will get after you cut the model and uncheck Consume out bodies.

  4. Step 4:

This is what we have now, two bodies, just separated and the line we drew represents the place where they were cut.

Lets now check one resulting body and Check Consume cut bodies.

This what we got, the other body was erased. You can reverse that of course.

  5. Step 5:

Now we are back to the main result where the both bodies remain.

You can move bodies now with Move/Copy Bodies feature.

  6. Step 6:

Now lets come back to the sketch stage and draw one more line across the model.

This was rolled back to one body.

  7. Step 7:

And if we now do the Split command we would get four different bodies.

I hope you understand how this works, try it and you will see ;)
