Tutorial - how to design WoodCraft Model example: Dragon

tutorial for this model Dragon WoodCraft

  1. Step 1:

We start of with new part and sketch on the right plane

  2. Step 2:

go to tools - sketch tools - sketch picture

  3. Step 3:

    download the pic

  4. Step 4:

Select the pic on sketch picture

  5. Step 5:

    position it..

  6. Step 6:

start drawing the contour of the body (middle section)

  7. Step 7:

then on the same sketch start drawing diferent sections,

  8. Step 8:

    another few more details...

  9. Step 9:

    all the sections I need

  10. Step 10:

then extrude the mid section I used the mid plane in direction to have the model centered..

  11. Step 11:

    mid section

  12. Step 12:

I made this section with an offset from the mid section to make my model wider and able to stand correclty

  13. Step 13:

    2 sections

  14. Step 14:

    3rd section touching the 2nd

  15. Step 15:

    legs section

  16. Step 16:

    legs added

  17. Step 17:

final section on the right side

  18. Step 18:

    right side

  19. Step 19:

I made this section with an offset from the mid section to make my model wider and able to stand correclty

  20. Step 20:

    2 sections

  21. Step 21:

    3rd section touching the 2nd

  22. Step 22:

    legs section

  23. Step 23:

    legs added

  24. Step 24:

final section on the right side

  25. Step 25:

    Right side complete

  26. Step 26:

    notice the offset

  27. Step 27:

on the left side of we have to start drawing the LEFT side sections it helps to see the picture

  28. Step 28:

all the left sections are drawn on the same sketch

  29. Step 29:

the more asymmetric your model is the better it will look ( at least change the leg positions)

  30. Step 30:

    more..

  31. Step 31:

when the left sections are done start extruding

  32. Step 32:

When extruding always check the symmetries of the sections my first sections needs to have an offset!

  33. Step 33:

    2nd section left

  34. Step 34:

    2section left

  35. Step 35:

    legs

  36. Step 36:

    legs

  37. Step 37:

    last left section

  38. Step 38:

    last left section

  39. Step 39:

    notice the simmetry (spacing simmetry)

  40. Step 40:

back to the right section sketch and extrude the right section of the face

  41. Step 41:

    right side of the face

  42. Step 42:

from the left section sketch extrude the left side of the face

  43. Step 43:

    left side of face

  44. Step 44:

on the right side we position the right side fixtures make sure they fit as centered as posible to avoid weak parts

  45. Step 45:

extrude them up to the first left side section (not through it) and offset it outward a bit too

  46. Step 46:

now we have to work on the rear fixture making some cuts to hold the parts in place one to hold the mid section and one to hold the end section

  47. Step 47:

make the fixture nicer by adding some fillets

  48. Step 48:

this hole is made to the end section so that they fit perfectly and this piece holds the rest of the sections in place

  49. Step 49:

then the corresponding hole to the mid section

  50. Step 50:

here you can see the shape of the fixture (it still needs some work to hold the other parts in place)

  51. Step 51:

The front Right fixture is made the same way I made the holes depth half the height of the fixture and made them both exaclty the same to ease the assembly

  52. Step 52:

then we go to the other side.. and position the left side fixtures too, you have to make sure theyre not colliding with the ones from the right side.. then the cutting procedure is pretty much the same as before just sketch over the fixtures face the cut profiles and make sure you are only cutting that part

  53. Step 53:

here is a view of the four fixtures I made them all the same size..

  54. Step 54:

to complete the fixtures we need a spacer so we will just add a little height to the open section its needed only on one side

  55. Step 55:

they end up looking like this

  56. Step 56:

now to fill the hole in the back I sketched on the RIGHTPLANE (symmetry plane), 3 lines then made them equal and made a rectangle over each one of them making sure they touched only on one point

  57. Step 57:

extruded them to fill the hole on a mid plane

  58. Step 58:

then on the same plane sketched a cut section that will be filled by the center section to hold these blocks

  59. Step 59:

extruded the cut on a mid plane

  60. Step 60:

added fillets to each block they have to be on separate fillet features because they are different bodies

  61. Step 61:

Then using Indent Feature with the center section as the target and the bottom of each block as tool we can get a precise fit for each block on the dragons spine!

  62. Step 62:

now back to the hole sketch we use it to extrude the fins to hold the blocks in place

  63. Step 63:

now finally to the face fixture we need to position it and extrude it it doesnt have to have much offset outside the face we will have to work on it to make it look better

  64. Step 64:

a simple way to finish this fixture can be just to make some more spikes come out of it so extruding this profile we can get it done

  65. Step 65:

now I cutted the side face sections to be held bythe fixture

  66. Step 66:

cut extrude the corresponding holes for the fixture to hold the side face sections

  67. Step 67:

made the cut on the mid face section a little higher to make it different from the side ones

  68. Step 68:

then cutted the corresponding piece on the fixture

  69. Step 69:

and thats about it!! =) hope you enjoyed it

  70. Step 70:

after taking those shots I figured it would look better this way...

  71. Step 71:

    how about that??
