Do we have to fear robots not just because they will take over our jobs but because they could be misused for dangerous and potentially deadly means?
This article asks that question and cautions AI researchers to become more paranoid https://www.wired.com/story/why-artificial-intelligence-researchers-should-be-more-paranoid/
If this technology gets in the hands of the wrong person, what kind of damage can they do?
Thoughts?
One thing I don't understand is the common argument/fear that robots are going to take over our jobs.
Robots generally cost less, don't get tired or sick, do a better job, and require less hand holding than a human worker and that people will be displaced from jobs.
We've already seen huge steps taken to have robots (at least arms) take over repetitive tasks like painting, moving parts, welding, inspection and other tasks.
But what is the alternative? Are we supposed to not use robots because they will displace some workers?
History is filled with thousands of "dead end" jobs, products, technologies, and services. Someone had the skills to perform those tasks, but they were replaced by "better, faster, cheaper, more popular". Robots are going to "take the jobs" of some people. Such is life (and progress). The alternative is to cease innovation, and turn back the clock to a "safer" time when you had a "safe" job hauling rocks to build a Pyramid in the desert.
Of course you might miss electricity, refrigeration / air conditioning, the radio, modern medicine, the Internet, plastics, chemistry, reliable and rapid transit, vacations, flight, hydraulics... and just about everything else taken for granted today.
Gotta save those jobs, don't let a robot do them.
I agree with you completely that the use of robots and AI’s in certain industries are essential for advancement and modernization.
I think the difference between the items that you listed and what’s happening now is that there wasn’t this looming doom for people in the typewriting industry or the horse and carriage industry like there is now for people who work in industries that will soon be taken over by robots.
Granted, I was not alive during those times nor did I work in those industries so maybe that wasn’t the case, but it seems that people don’t know the extent to which robots will take over their jobs so they are mostly scared of the unknown.
But in the end, like you said, it's the natural progression of things and will only benefit our society.
Curse or blessing?
Each invention serves a good purpose but at the same time one can use this invention for bad purposes. The ability to split atoms is awesome but also a curse when this technology is used in bombs. A hunter has a rifle to facilitate the hunt, the animal does not have to suffer because by a shot it is directly dead but the same weapon can be aimed at humans. Trucks are great, deliveries from A to B and back so you can go shopping but at the same time trucks can be used to race in crowds.
These are just a few examples but it is important to understand the principle.
AI has strong advantages but just as much disadvantages. There will be people who will use this technology against you as a weapon or for unconscious manipulation, but you can not stop this development.
It's important that as many people as possible know a little about it to understand what an AI is.
What is an AI?
As a beginner in this area, it is assumed that there is something intelligent behind it, that will also make it clear when you see all these pictures with electronic brains or robots in a human frame. There must be a conscious mind. No, an AI is just mathematics, a complex formula. An AI (thinks) rational, it does not think about what is good and evil. She only reacts the way she was trained and that's what can make a KI dangerous. Because only if you get an AI to learn harmful things will it do it. What an AI can, you can also program it yourself, but this is much more time-consuming and the AI can be used more flexibly.
An AI is great at recognizing patterns, it can learn to distinguish between cats and dogs in pictures. She can learn to drive a car so that it uses less fuel and chooses an efficient route. In image processing, AI is also used to add effects to images, requiring complex mathematical operations that take a long time, and AI can do so in a fraction of that time.
If you are afraid of AI, you should be afraid of any software, because AI does the same as any other software too: math. With AI complex problems are easier to solve, but it is more complicated to solve simple tasks with AI.
Advice to you
Anyone interested in AI will find tons of information, but in my opinion there is very little good information, much more information about bad scenarios such as world domination or no work, etc. These scenarios have burned in us through films, discussions etc. You should think critically about it but do not jump to conclusions, because only if you have dealt with the topic and I mean the math and the programming behind it, can make a judgment on it.
(The stupid people scream the loudest): Do not be stupid, do not shout around and do not spread ignorance, instead, inform yourself to be able to have a say.

I really enjoy what all parties have said in this discussion! As supplementary info. to both sides of the debate I'd suggest for anyone who's interested to follow DARPAtv and Robert Miles both on YouTube for they go into great depths on current trends in industry and public domains in reference to AGI and robotics and how we as an international community are addressing the rising problems and concerns. A look into the anti-establishment viewpoint i.e. hackers might not be a bad idea ether and so DEFCON is listed too. Between these listings you'll find at least three additional prospectives of AGI from varying backgrounds within our society. Hopefully you all find something of interest! ;)
