I believe the GrabCad ranking/liking system has de-railed. If models like this crazy deformed chair, that is packed with work from one of the other 3d websites, got 10 likes, and high quality outstanding models from other members get almost nothing, there is a serious glitch in the system...In the past the GrabCad team talked about handing out credits for downloads instead of likes, but unfortunately nothing happenend...It all was hollow talk!! And now we are stuck with a broken ranking system.
In the SPAM discussion we raise a lot of ridiculous cases like this one (which the GC rating system tolerates). I withdrew my comments and stopped paying attention to all this when I noticed the "insulting permissiveness" of the staff. I just look the other way and keep doing my thing. I have also thought that "other users are not stupid" (even the most novice) nor do they need another to tell them that this is garbage!
Anyone can design a chair with a well-leveled seat: where's the creativity in that?
Now, doing this (or the other model with 3 misaligned legs) that quickly brings the user to the ground... is only for geniuses!
I see that they have criticized without asking what the author's "design intention" was: what if his idea was to discover and punish the lazy person who sits down to rest during working hours???
At the same time we have to remain tolerant on the quality, since the community is also made for students and beginners who have here a window to express themselves. The most experienced of the community can still bring their know-how to the beginner by guiding them, and tell them where there is a defect so that they (students and beginners) can improve...
On the other hand, it is certain that the rating system may need to be reviewed. Well, I don't have much idea about it (I'm not too much for a rating system in general)... On the other hand, leaving a little thank you for those who download won't be too much...
Yes it's correct!
Thinking in the same direction, is that now I only dedicate myself to answering questions. When they have any questions, I do my best to try to help them understand and improve.
But "I don't talk to the walls of GC anymore" to denounce the obvious. Being obvious and rude, I understand that they just don't want to improve it. Life is too short to waste time talking to... walls.
I remember an old discussion in which I just raised this: how is it possible that a model has hundreds of downloads but only a few likes, comments and thanks?
There could be more likes and comments than downloads, if those who thank you do not plan to use the model at that time. But the downloads (which I suspect with intentions of use) without implying an "automatic like" seems somewhat unfair.
This is not the work from a beginner.....this member has thousands of furniture uploads.....so perhaps next time he may have a look at WHAT he is uploading....this is a shame to ALL members who try to do their best...
Perhaps they feel obliged to like it, because their names are frequently mentioned...."I dedicate this model to my dear friend......blablabla. A bit childish behavior for a "community leader"....
There is no notification in the model description about the intention of this crooked chair, as described in the CG rules......just the always present, "I dedicate this model to my dear friend...bladibladibla...."
It's not the only objectionable behavior I've seen.
There is another one that I mentioned a long time ago: that of the leaders who wait for someone to join GC to "follow" them before they have uploaded a model, and even before they even have a picture on their profile or a description!!!
What is the point of a "megastar" following a "total unknown"? Yes, yes, you got it right! The idea is that the total unknown is flattered and immediately follows the megastar (and I must say that it works perfectly for them because it is done by both God and his 12 Disciples).
PS: I noticed it when I saw those "empty profiles" that curiously showed "a follower" immediately. I thought that he could be an acquaintance of the newcomer, but no, it was God himself!
I think we've been too quick to judge and shortsighted with design intent:
It is a chair to train abdominals! (does not allow you to rest your back)
Under the warm light of this beautiful magic lamp (magic because of how it stands, and how it achieves light with just a thread dangling!):
Hans best to try not get worked up, Grabcad is only concerned with uploads no matter what they are.
What I can’t figure out is why go through all the effort of posting bad models just to boost his ranking. No doubt he invests considerable time. But in the end he has nothing except a boost in his ranking. He can’t take that to the bank or put it on his resume. He has no models to be proud of and no one in their right mind would use these models. He has a high ranking and nothing else.
Is there some benefit to the rankings that makes all the effort worthwhile?
No skin off of my back either way. Just seems like a huge waste of energy.
You are so right Bob, there must be some weird reasons for this member to upload these type of worthless models, but I can't understand why there are members that hit the like button, and decorate their comments, how great and wonderfull everything is, with childish (fit for a kindergarten) images, every time the waste bin is filled with a new piece of crap (packed with badly compiled work from others)...
I noticed a relationship - people try to like many models of other users because they count on "revenge" in the form of likes. It's the same with commenting.
People feel automatically obliged to massively click on the weak models of other users and comment on them in return for the received likes or comments.
@Hans :
You have to be more relaxed about it. You have a very high position here as an engineer, designer and artist. The new number of likes or comments will not change that. It takes just a few seconds on a user's profile to see how professional they are. Normal people know that without likes and followers numbers...
Weak, stolen, poorly imported models from other CAD systems will always appear here...People are gready for dopamine from likes :)
..
BTW chair , lamp and other models are just corrupted models becouse incorrect/unprofessional import from other CAD systems sodeformation of geometry appears.
I notice meanwhile that the GrabCAD-staff has only one outstanding talent, it is to find excuses to do nothing.
Another problem in the ranking system is that good models are no longer automatically promoted. They used to show up on the entry page, to be seen and potentially 'liked' by everyone who opened GrabCAD. But now the 'Popular this month' page is very static; in only contains 24 (manually selected?) models and it seems to miss most of the best new uploaded models. This must be a deliberate change and I hate it!
I never really understood "the criteria", if there is one, for the selection of those "most popular of the month or year" models...
Because they expose good and bad models, with many likes and with few, with many comments and with few, although in general with many downloads (over 100).
The latter would be interesting to know, because if the number of downloads is the criteria or part of the selection criteria, then it would be logical to relate it to the score and the automatic likes for its authors.
Nor do I understand the meaning of some badges or, rather, the absence of others.
For example: There are five levels of the "Question Master" badge that reward users who post questions to the GrabCAD Community in Groups and Questions as they encourage learning and knowledge sharing. It's ok!
But... why not reward THE USERS WHO ANSWER THEM and receive the acceptance of their answers by those who ask. Answering technical questions often involves hard work that is only rewarded by a meager "upvote" score. But, I must say that the latter often does not exist, even when the question is accepted, simply because the other users do not show interest or are unaware of the topic.
On the other hand, the recognition of the effort to answer a question is "one time only", it is not a "scalable" recognition like that of a model's likes. Therefore, the teaching task remains "ungrateful and belittled" even in the face of ignorance, which leads to asking questions! For me, this is crazy!
Perhaps we reached the bottom of the spiral downwards.....( and on the way down the GC team seem to have jumped off....)
Yes, perhaps. But I do find that GrabCAD's derail began when it was taken over by Stratasys. I seriously think that they still don't know in which direction to take the site.
If a company does not realize that its greatest capital is its human capital, I think it is destined to fail.
I wonder what would happen if another company detected this situation of "dissatisfaction in valuable human resources" and planned to offer them facilities to "migrate to their structure", promising everything that they got tired of asking for and even adding new interesting challenges?
I have a small engineering company, in which it has been very difficult for me to find, train and maintain quality human resources for 20 years. If you had access to the good users of GC and their great technical potential, and access to potential clients around the world, then you would offer well-paid engineering services, from which you could obtain genuine economic resources for the company (rather than the annoying and uncreative "advertisements").
I also came across this abomination that has no ties with a lamp, and in the conversion process from native format to an .obj is quite serious deformed...(love the glowing rod instead of a lightbulb) And the "greatest" thing is that 11 CG members hit the like button!!!! Whats wrong with these guys??? Models should be liked for the quality, not for the person who drew/borrowed or stole it.....
I really don't know what the motivation of these followers is, but I must admit that they have incredible loyalty!
Sometimes I have thought that it could be a real personal appreciation for someone they admired in other times and who now makes mistakes that they kindly prefer to put aside and continue expressing their appreciation.
that is called "a diciple".....
Haha, the old fox is at it again...First I want to thank you for your diagnose of my "condition", this saves me a trip to my doctor!! Second: Great to see you could find some time to repair the chair, unfortunately other members who participated in this discussion also saw the first ugly distorted version that you have uploaded the 17th of March (the data is still there for everybody to see) ..The New render from the 23th does not reflect the attached CAD file, so this is again a violation of the GC rules, and so your statement about "fake photoshoping" has been proven wrong...Why do you make false accusations to other members??? For a member who was granted the badge of "community leader" this is a very dissapointing action. But I'm glad that all the other members can see for themselves, what a fraudulent person you are ,who thinks that GrabCad is his personel playground and who believes the GC rules don't apply to ..Thanks for that!!!...and about the falsely accusation of me manipulating your render.....Just a simple apology will be sufficient!!
