Dear 65ef6ef2,
I'm obviously biased, since I'm a Stratasys employee and think the J750 is great, but that's probably too big a machine for a home/hobby use.
Some of our customers have had good success with a RIZE printers, and this one looks to be more desktop size, although I don't know about the price: https://www.rize3d.com/xrize/.
One of the other players in the COLOR 3D printing space is Mimaki, but they look to be industrial, professional grade printers in the J750 level too: http://www.mimakiusa.com/products/3d-printers/mimaki-3d-printer/
Honestly, if I was starting out at home, at a hobby level, I would print parts in single-color FDM, then prime and paint them. You could do that in an afternoon with a $500 printer and $50 worth of paints, which is a good way to get started.
Hope that helps a little, maybe some other people here can answer, and if you ask the same question on reddit in https://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/, you might get a lot more answers!
