I have not focused on this, so please, take with a grain of salt as someone who "hasn't walked this path". My thoughts though...

Focus big 3 auto manufacturers but also, tier 2 suppliers and motorsports divisions. Custom tailor your resume/CV for those jobs. As far as software goes, there's a pretty even split between NX and CATIA in this sector, last I checked. First job, it won't really matter so much your software experience as it does, your ability to think through and articulate solutions to problems.

What do you WANT to focus on? If you're seriously into say.. suspension design then what personal projects have you completed to that end? Your own car?? School automotive team car development?? What things have you actually placed your hands on?

None? Then don't knock getting into a motorsports division where you can develop your skills and gain experience.

Hello Osama, first of all, there's no such thing as "wasting six months" in front-end web development. It plays a big role if you're a designer. Why? You can create prototypes and interactive designs to showcase your design concepts and ideas. Remember this: when you try to find a job, one thing you can say is that you are capable of using basic SolidWorks, but you are also capable of using front-end web development, which can help a company attract potential clients for the prototype you'll produce. What you should be focusing on is finding a job related to design engineering. While finding one, try to enhance your skills related to the industry you want to be in. For example, if you want to go into the automobile industry, then find something that can improve your designing skills. I don't think you need to study theory or anything. In my experience, you can learn it after you're already in the job. The strategy? Go ahead and look for a job, and just pursue what you want.

I cannot speak for everyone, but I do know that some people who start their careers in oil and gas succeed while others do not enjoy it. It's a matter of preference and what works for you. Don't let other people tell you what you should pursue; you should be the one to decide in the end. Go and create the life that you want. :)

I agree with you, and I think you are mentor able. Find people who are in the field and ask them for guidance. After all, it can shorten the process if you're asking people already working in the job you dream of.

It depends on what you want to do in the Automotive industry.

Catia is used in the design of the body, and all the bits that are fastened to it like, bumpers, mirrors, lights etc;

Catia is for curved surfaces and gives a much smoother surface much easier than to do it in ptc Creo; although Creo will give a Class-A surface, it is just a pain in the arse, and it will take ages (relative to Catia).

ptc Creo is best for assemblies, such as the full automoble, with all its little sub-assemblys such as engine, gearboxe, axlels, wheels, etc, etc; plus all its individual components, such as nuts and bolts, seals and fasteners, wires and pipes, cylinder blocks, conrods, crankshafts, gears, etc, etc.

The Catia path will limited the work you can get; for example, out of a few hundred engineers at Triumph motorycles, in Hinkley, there is less than a handfull who are cometant to create Class-A models for motorcyle body parts such as Petrol tanks, mudgards, plastic covers, etc, etc, and not many more who are competant to design and model the core parts of an engine, gearbox, airbox or motorcycle.

There are thousands of little bits of automobiles that need to be designed and/or modeled for an engine, hundreds for a gearbox, tens for an alternator, and a handful for the little bits like door handles, seats, pedals, etc, etc.

I would recomend that you learn ptc Creo. I have worked on engine design for Caterpillar, Cummins and Perkins engines; they all insist on ptc Creo.

Other possible emloyers who insist on ptc Creo are Norton and BSA Motorcycles for their engines, gearboxes, frames, forkes, etc, etc.
