It is hard to tell from the photo exactly what the shape of the woven area is, but it is most likely a repeating pattern of an oscillating wave. Lofting or sweeping are going to get you started in the right direction.

I have two interwoven models you can check out to see how they were made. The chair will be easier since there is no need to actually weave the pattern. The end goal is to only make it look woven.

Additional inspiration from another old book. This comes from a sketch in the 1851 book titled: The Power of Form Applied to Geometric Tracery Scaled down it could make for a good looking military medal. Or, using the basic concept, this pattern could be expanded to create fabric.

There are tutorials for how to make weaves on youtube but they all apply to flat surfaces with guide-lines for feature pattern. What i want to know is how to make the pattern on a curved surface extracted from a chair...
