Automotive Sensors for Self Driving Cars - RADAR - LIDAR - Cameras - Bluetooth - GPS - WiFi - Cellular - 5G

There is a revolution going on in the automotive industry as many car manufacturers are racing toward a self driving and electric car both for passenger transportation and also for package delivery.

There are these basic self-driving automotive sensors that you will find for most self driving cars that have merged part of a high-speed real time sensor 'fusion' :

  • Cameras (visible light image recognition)
  • LIDAR (light based proximity sensing)
  • RADAR (radio frequency proximity sensing)

However there are other sensors that are part of an overall system level that are used for coordination and logistics reporting such as :

  • Cellular and 5G (high speed communications)
  • Bluetooth (PAN devices and sensors)
  • WiFi (building to automotive connectivity)
  • GPS (location reporting)

These other wireless links provide additional data links for pulling in IoT devices, Web content and services, and logistics for traffic control and transportation optimization; both for passengers and for packages.

So although there is a movement toward self driving and electric cars there is also a wireless revolution that is pushing Radio Frequency technologies up to 100 GHz and data rates up to 50 Gbps.
