I would hope that if you were going to create a bolt, screw... any type of fastener to be used in your assemblies, that you would want to build it from attributes, such that you can drive a part family model (from spreadsheet).

That, IMO, is the "industry approach". I haven't created a fastener in years. Simply load a master (part family model) into an assembly, choose the diameter, pitch, length, material, etc., that I want, and the system loads the correct model.

Next step after creating the master is creation of remembered constraints, so you can place the component upon loading into the assembly.
