Here is a new challenge. You maybe know this knot model. It´s a famous exercise for CAD.
I challenge you to rebuild the knot only with the following drawing. (all radius are similar; start and end straight parts have the same length; middle straight session is 10mm long)
There is no further meassurement needed.
CATIA doesn't have 3D Sketches (like some of the other systems), so I had to join four 2D sketches to get the centerline. The bigger challenge for me was interpreting the First Angle views.
At first glance this looks impossible, but taking things one step at a time it becomes possible. As you can see I have been playing with the profile shapes and although interesting I still haven't found something that I really like. Anyways thank you for the challenge. I am using FreeCad and it was only recently that I learned how to join two lines that are out of plane, otherwise this challenge would have been much more difficult.
I don't know much about using SOLIDWORKS 3D sketches, so I spend a lot of time building datum to sketch, but it doesn't seem to be very friendly
Awesome! CATIA
My message to dear "Jack k" is that you can use the capabilities of the CATIA in the shape design environment to apply 3D sketching like this. One triangular 2d sketch as a base guideline, then using circles in 3D.
Thanks Iman!
But your tree doesn't look much different from my tree. I don't consider a Geometric Set to be the same thing as a 3D Sketch. Did you Join all the circles and lines together to make one sweep?
I like your rendering!
Thanks for your comment, dear Jack!
I agree with you - the structure of the tree is similar to each other. However, I wasn't referring to the consideration of the geometric set features in the 3D sketch. Specifically, I was referring to the process of drafting circles in a 3D modeling environment, without having to create sketches. and at the end, as you mentioned, I used the join command and then sweep.
I don't know that I would say a 3D sketch is better. It's quite complex to get it set up. Though you have only 1 3D sketch versus 4 or more 2D sketches There is no real benefit to using a 3D sketch. It probably takes longer to do and the end result is the same.
