Anyone know how to convert a 3d max file (.max) to something Solidworks 2011 can use?

With SolidWorks Premium Version you can check the AddIn "Scanto3D" and open directly MAX Files in SW...

it's not just about converting the file to iges, it's also about the actual geometry difference. You'll want to convert the mesh to something more "acceptable" to what SW wants.
You just export or save as the working file into .iges format which get support in solidworks. Otherwise you may also try for .vrml also.
