Has anyone had any experience using CorelCAD as a more budget friendly version of AutoCAD?
Got a question from one fellow engineer about this. CorelCAD should be very similar to AutoCAD, use the same dwg format but is considerably cheaper.
Anyone using it or had any experience of potential limitations etc?

Ill'd recommend DraftSight it is free and pretty similar to AutoCAD. http://www.3ds.com/products/draftsight/download-draftsight/

Yes we use DraftSight for CAD viewing, It is very similar to AutoCAD (we use as well + Solidworks). DS even works with the ACAD scrips, loading info into the boarder, names dates etc.
I don't know about CorelCAD, but DS has some limitations in some autocad features like data extraction, dynamic blocks and exporting attributes to Excel.
I have seen many 2D solutions but almost all of them are copying autocad, I don't see any originality in any of them.
That is true - they have no original features, but do they need. I imagine they are developed to entice users to move away from autodesk to other platforms with a 3d step up.

If you are working in 2D and want something free that opens and edits Autocad drawings, you might want to check out DoubleCAD XT 3.0

GstarCAD http://www.hhcadsales.com/ is today the best low cost Autocad alternative by far, I bought it because the interface and the response to the commands are identical to AutoCAD 2010.
