How important is Auto cad to a civil engineer at University level

Not as important as you may think. Civil engineering knowledge, materials, construction knowledge, knowing how things are made, organisation skills, all way more important, being a CAD wizard way down the priority list. You must know the difference between good drawings and bad, how to read and understand drawings. They have CAD technicians whose job it is to take your design details, sketches and such and turn them into finished construction ready drawings. If you are any good you are of more use doing the engineering instead of spending too much of your time doing the plan drafting. It is always good basic CAD skills as there may be times when this enables you to do small bits and pieces when the drafting personnel are busy on the big jobs
