How to design this pattern on circular shape?

Though I can use loft but simple loft cant bring me this square type texture on this. can any one suggest some ideas?

Suggest some thing which will be applicable on oval shape as I have to develop it in oval?

I think a sweep is a better option than a loft in this case.

Maybe we are talking about different things? Maybe Inventor is different from SOLIDWORKS?
This is what I get with a revolve, a sweep, and a circular pattern.

You might be able to make a sphere and then cut it all the way through a bit more than half way through like the pic attached.
