the replace too is used to replace one element with other such as a sketch for a sketch, surface for surface, aixs for axis
to use the tool simply right click on the element you want to replace click replace and then select the element you wish to replace it with (See images)

Besides what Carl said, you can use it also to replace Bodies. For example if you have a Boolean operation you can change the body inside it (in case you have a new revision or something like this)
