Loft works well as Robert demonstrated, and is the easiest solution.
A second method is using the Split Curve to divide the models faces into more faces. Those can then be deleted and replaced with new geometry. It may not be practicable for this model, but it is a handy skill to have, and it will expose you to some surfacing tools.
A third option is a Boolean Operation. In this case you'd model the unwanted geometry into the part as a second, un-merged body. Then the 2nd body is subtracted from the 1st.
As you are learning, I'd suggest trying to remake simple parts like this in several different ways.
