When working with assemblies, use the Large Assembly Mode and set the components to Lightweight. To do this, right click on the top assembly and Right Click -> Set Resolved to Lightweight.
And the Large Assembly Mode option can be accessed through the Tools Menu.

To find more about Large Assembly Mode and Lightweight Components and their options, make a search on the SolidWorks web site.

You can improve rebuild times by not applying mates to parts that have been produced using the pattern feature.

Try:
1. Using 'large assembly mode'
2. Arranging the main assembly into sub-assemblies.
3. 'Fix' non moving components (this will suppress their mates and save CPU time)
4. Turn 'real view graphics' off.

Or, set the "shaded and draft quality HLR/HLV resolution" lower. This will also decrease the file size.
The "wireframe and high quality HLR/HLV resolution" can also be set lower, but I never experienced more or less lag with this option.

When creating Assemblies whereby you wish to show (render) threaded items (lead-screws, bolts, etc) use "Faux Thread" http://grabcad.com/library/faux-false-thread-solidworks-example ... It will look just like Helix Threaded items in the renderings only the build time and CPU will be MUCH less. (Faux Thread is Not SW Cosmetic Thread, it will show up in renderings)

Maybe more buy some memory RAM will help do you use 64 bit software ? if yes then use min. 8 GB
