Is it essential for a Designer (Design Engineer) in any Automotive/Manufacturing Industry to learn CATIA??

W'd it be sufficient if we have a good knowledge and expertise n w solidworks and proEngineer ??..and what are colleges/Universities in Germany offering courses in Design of Automotive components??

For my students CATIA V5 is "the key" to get a good job. Most (nearly every) OEM (VW, BMW, Porsche, Airbus ... )uses CATIA V5 (VW, BMW, Porsche, Airbus ... ) for their construction. Mercedes will use for future project NX, but it will take some years until there is no more CATIA V5 at Mercedes.
I think SW and ProE are very good products and you learn "how to construct in 3D", so the switch to another programm will be easy for you.
By the way, if you are knew at any company they will train use for about 6 month to use "their system"

Sufficient, yes, but being familiar with more applications, especially expertise in Catia and SolidEdge (Siemens) can give you an advantage over competing engineers/designers for the desired position/workplace. I will most likely never need anything more than SolidWorks in my job because I'm my own boss, but that doesn't prevent me to expand my knowledge with other applications. The more you know, the more you can do, and that is what your employer will appreciate and pay for.

I agree with Robert Stein, it is sufficient because not all parts in Automotive/Manufacturing are designed by CATIA alone. But if that is the only industry considered as a career choice then expertise in CATIA is well catered.

very nice question... I also want to know

with new CATIA V6 2012x i think,Dassault is bulldozing the way into new paradigm,i have seen few videos like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWTkXsym0zE
designing control systems itself in catia this is huge i guess.
