Tapered twist perfume bottle

The only tricky part is the intricate decoration winding around the bottle.

I'm already stuck at creating the first line that would fully lie on it, I tried the following to no avail:

Projecting a helix onto it: result too rough
Extruding a helix through it and intersecting: result too rough
Building a spline from points on section extremities all the way up, use body as support: I need to experiment with a different number of points to smoothen it

Any ideas?

1. Hard to make suggestions based on the one picture, which doesn't show the twisted shape that well. Is the twist the same profile the entire length? Some more pictures would help us understand the shape, or maybe some hand-drawn sketches of the various cross-sections.

2. I agree that you need some kind of guide curve for the twist. I would have tried projecting a helix as well. Another method would to draw a point-to-point line between the start point on top and ending point on bottom with the revolved surface as the support.
