What is basic difference in active solar heating and passive solar heating main criteria aspects?

Passive would be optimizing a structure to make use of solar heat. Like designing a house with large windows, to have maximum sun intake in colder seasons. ( when situated in northern regions this is a standard way of building houses)
Active solar heating would be using the heat of the sun and "capturing" it via solar panels, heat exchangers and so on, to provide heating for example a house and its water system.
