basically this is the quality of the surface that is produced, an A surface is a high quality surface that is used for external features on a product that a user would interact with and B surfaces tend to be for the internal or mechanical faces where the visual quality of the surface is not important. software packages such as Solidworks do not have the capability to produce A quality surfaces so this is a very important quality in CATIA.
