You need to decide if you're more interested in the artistic side of design or the mechanical. Mechanical design is, for some, not going to fulfill their desire to design artistically.
What types of design are you most interested in? This will help in narrowing down the field. Also, are you more interesting in the mechanics and mathematics of design or the form?
