CATIA V5 - Preselecting and Selecting elements

Preselection and selection of elements in CATIA V5 are essential for various operations, such as creating, editing, and manipulating objects. They allow you to select specific elements, such as faces, edges, or components, to perform desired actions.

  1. Step 1: Step by step case study

Preselection is the process of highlighting elements without actually selecting them. This allows you to preview the elements that will be selected before activating the selection command. To preselect elements in CATIA V5, follow these steps:

1)Click anywhere in the geometry area.

    2) Position your pointer over the object you want to preselect. The element will be highlighted in a semi-transparent blue color.

Press any keyboard arrow (up, down, right, or left) or Ctrl + F11. Tip: The Ctrl + F11 shortcut gives the focus to the geometry area and lets you use the preselection navigator when a dialog box is open.

Once preselected, elements can be selected using various methods:

Single Click: Click on the desired element to select it.

Window Selection: Click and drag a window around the elements you want to select.

Select by ID: Enter the ID of the element you want to select in the 'Select by Name' dialog box.

Select by Filter: Use the 'Filter' option to select elements based on their type, characteristics, or other criteria.

Preselection Navigator: The preselection navigator is a tool that allows you to navigate and select elements using a tree-like structure. To activate the preselection navigator, press Ctrl + Shift + F11.

Selecting by Features: You can also select elements based on their features, such as faces, edges, or vertices. To do this, navigate to the desired feature in the Feature Tree and right-click. Select 'Select' from the context menu. The corresponding elements will be selected in the geometry area.
