Create a rectangle spring using from 2D sketches on Solidworks

It is quite difficult to create a non-circle spring. For example a rectangle one. So in this tutorial, I will show you a very easy step of creating a rectangle spring. This method is efficient in creating multistage coils.

You can visit my website to see another method.

  1. Step 1: Create planes

Create 4 planes that form a rectangle. You can already use the existed plane. Tips: It's better to create 4 new planes and use the existed plane as the center.

  2. Step 2: Create the 2D sketch

Start sketching in the first plane and do the sketch to create an angled line. Before doing the sketch, choose all of your helix parameters in advance regarding mainly the pitch and revolution. Then pattern it from the revolution you have chosen.

  3. Step 3: Sketch to the other plane

Then choose the next plane perpendicular to it and sketch the other line. Proceed like the 2nd step.

  4. Step 4: Verify constraint

After finishing sketching the 4 planes, verify it. All lines should coincide with each other apart from the start and end.

  5. Step 5: Extract a 3D sketche from 2D

Next, create a new 3D sketch, and choose all lines you have created by using the Convert entities command. Add fillet in the 3D sketch.

  6. Step 6: Finally use sweep to create the spring

Finally, you have your Rectangle 3D sketches. Go to Features/sweep. Choose a circular profile and use the 3D sketch as a path and define a diameter.
