Tutorial - Making a Star bit (Screw driver bit) in SolidWorks?

Here is the tutorial.

  1. Step 1:

    Start Solidworks in Part mode.

  2. Step 2:

    Make this profile on Front plane.

  3. Step 3:

    Revolve it about x-axis.

  4. Step 4:

    Make offset plane of right plane at 3.5mm.

  5. Step 5:

    Create Sketch on the right plane of the body.

  6. Step 6:

    Make this profile.

  7. Step 7:

    Exit the sketch and then start sketch on plane1.

  8. Step 8:

    Make the same profile but virtually outside the body.

  9. Step 9:

    Under Features tab choose lofted cut.

  10. Step 10:

    Select both profiles.

  11. Step 11:

    Choose Circular pattern.

  12. Step 12:

    Select the circular edge as pattern parameter and select the lofted cut as the feature.

  13. Step 13:

    Click OK and now start sketch on right plane.

  14. Step 14:

    Make a hexagon of side 4mm.

  15. Step 15:

    Extrude it by 12mm.

  16. Step 16:

    Select the right face of the hexagon and then sketch.

  17. Step 17:

    Make a sketch tangent to the sides of the hexagon.

  18. Step 18:

    Under features tab choose extruded cut.

  19. Step 19:

    Check flip side to cut and draft enabled at 60degrees and click OK.

  20. Step 20:

    Repeat the same step with the other face of the hexagon.

  21. Step 21:

    Top plane>>sketch.

  22. Step 22:

    Make an equilateral triangle.

  23. Step 23:

    Under reference geometry choose axis.

  24. Step 24:

    Select the circular face of the body and click OK.

  25. Step 25:

    Under features tab choose revolved cut.

  26. Step 26:

    Select the triangle and the axis and click OK.

  27. Step 27:

    Front Plane>>Sketch.

  28. Step 28:

    Make a random profile like this one.

  29. Step 29:

    Under features tab choose revolved cut.

  30. Step 30:

    Choose axis1 and then click OK.

  31. Step 31:

    Isometric View and we have he star bit obtained. It was not so good as compared to the last one but illustrates the basic instruction and can be improved if done carefully.
