How do I know the physical dimensions of a design?

I am new to 3D printing, and apologize for noonish questions. I am very intrigued by many of these designs that are available for download in the website. One thing that I am not clear on is, How would I know if that design will fit in my 3D printer? Say I have a 6x6x7 3D printer, and the design can only be made with a 10x10x12 3D printer, How would I know that before downloading it, and try to print it?

use the 3d viewer, that has an inbuild option to measure models....

You should be able to scale any model you have in the software for your 3D printer. it may not print at the size the designer 'drew' the part as but you can scale it smaller or cut it into a few parts and print it in multiple prints and glue the parts together when you are done.
