Which are all the important domains for Mechanical Design Engineer?

I actually want list of different sectors & skills companies want & expect from a Mechanical Design Candidate.
Some special ones too.

So that I (& many others too) could choose wisely and master one of the sector.

Accepted answer

Automotive, Aerospace, Tool/Die/Mold, etc., etc..

All looking for the same key things:

1. The ability and willingness to collaborate
2. The ability to communicate and relay ideas effectively
3. Critical thinking skills: identify root cause, build logic ladders, etc.
4. Willingness to learn and continue learning on your own, but most importantly, from others

These 4 things are things I look for in a candidate and in my opinion, are the things that keep your payroll file in 'active' status. The degree gets you in the door and tells me you have the fortitude but the real education and journey to 'mastery' starts your first day on the job.

I know... none of this has anything to do with technical mastery. :)

Of course, this is aimed at a student, coming into his/her first job. For someone that has some years under their belt, these 4 still apply. I'd add the willingness to share ideas and experiences an integral part of bringing any experienced engineer on board.
