Tutorial : How to model a simple gear mechanism in solid works and show design intent

link to the model is : Gear with animation

  1. Step 1:

Open solidworks screen with a new part.make a circle and extrude it

  2. Step 2:

in a sketch iin the plane of the face of figure, create the following construction lines

  3. Step 3:

then creat the involute profile of the tooth using splies with the given dimensions. do not alter the dimensions.for bigger profile you can take its multiple.

  4. Step 4:

extend the splines to form a closed figure and extrude it

  5. Step 5:

this will create the tooth. now make the circular pattern of the tooth along the circumference of the cirle

  6. Step 6:

create a circle in the center and cut it so that we an insert a pin.

  7. Step 7:

give additional features and make it look like a real gear.(this is a optional step)

  8. Step 8:

open a new part to create pin. make a circle of the same size as that of the hole in the gear and extrude it

  9. Step 9:

now its time to create an assembly. open a new assembly and insert two gears(you can use the same gears as well as different gears with different diameter, if you are taking two different gears be sure that the ratio of the diameter of both gear is equal to the ratio of the number of teeths, else it will create a problem thereafter).

  10. Step 10:

after inserting two gears mate their front planes(or respective plane) with a coincident mate.

  11. Step 11:

align the gears perfectly and under the mate tab select the gear mate in the mechanical mates.select the faces of the inner surfaces.

  12. Step 12:

insert two pins and mate the edges with the respective gears.

  13. Step 13:

now suppress the gear mate and align the gears perfectly so that the teeths mesh into each other

  14. Step 14:

    now fix the two pins

  15. Step 15:

its time to create animation. click on the motion study tab in the motion manager pane and select basic motion

  16. Step 16:

to create motion select the motor icon.

  17. Step 17:

in the motor property bar, select the face of one of the gear and select appropriate direction and rpm.
